The Arc of Luzerne County celebrated community honorees who help improve the quality of lives for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, at its annual awards dinner -

    Our public affairs program- Newsmakers' was honored Thursday night during the Arc of Luzerne County annual awards dinner.
    Hosts of Newsmakers- Senior Producer Jayne Ann Bugda and the I-Team's Andy Mehalshick were presented with the group's 'Community Education and Awareness Award.
    The Arc of Luzerne County- offers programs and services to   to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
    A number of other awards were presented  during the awards dinner at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.

This year’s award recipients are: Distinguished Service for a Lifetime of Dedication to People with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities Fred Lokuta, Deputy Secretary, Department of Public Welfare Office of Developmental Programs

To recognize a local employer or business who has demonstrated a commitment to diversity in the workforce by recognizing the benefits of hiring people with disabilities.

Improving Lives Award Kiss Theater To recognize a person, business, or organization who has demonstrated a commitment to the mission and beliefs of The Arc.

Sherwood Baker Memorial Award for Outstanding Community Volunteer of the Year Victory Sports To recognize a community member who has made a significant difference in the lives of people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

Educators of the Year
Mollie Fetterman, Hazelton Area School District

Barbara Zekas, Wyoming Valley West School District

 Maylan Nicholson, Wyoming Valley West School District

Jenieve Michalek, Wyoming Valley West School District

To recognize a professional educator(s) currently employed by a Luzerne County accredited school, intermediate unit, college, or university, for their exceptional and creative techniques in expanding educational opportunities for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.


 John Glenn Popple Citizenship Award Ninoska Nuñez To honor a member of the community with an intellectual or developmental disability for outstanding participation in, or contribution to his or her community

 Michael Miller Award for Outstanding Staff Person of the Year Michael Supey, Program Assistant at The Arc of Luzerne County
To recognize an individual who has demonstrated excellence in their field in working with people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
