Lynn Carle and her husband Tom established Champ's Cause in memory of their beautiful 18-month old, Ethan, who passed away on May 9, 2012 after a very brief battle with a rare disorder called HLH (Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis).
Ethan was taken by ambulance to Janet Weiss Children’s Hospital in Danville after suddenly becoming ill.  It was there that diagnosis of HLH was suspected then confirmed by doctors at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.  Ethan was then transferred by life-flight to CHOP to being chemotherapy treatment.
HLH is a disorder of the immune system in which infection fighting white blood cells called histiocytes and lymphocytes build up and begin to attack healthy organs and skin.  It typically manifests itself as fever, jaundice and rash.  Abnormal liver enzymes are frequently present. Although HLH is classified as a rare disease, the fact is that it is often misdiagnosed or rarely diagnosed in time to treat.  Persons with HLH undergo chemotherapy treatment and most often need a bone marrow transplant.
“Our champ fought so hard and bravely during his battle with HLH, and we will continue his fight.  We want to support other families affected by this horrible disease and help much needed research efforts to find a cure,” said Lynn Carle.
Being true to the fund’s mission to raise awareness and further HLH and Histiocytic disorder research, Champ’s Cause proudly supports the research efforts being conducted at CHOP, led by Dr. Kim Nichols.  The fund has also helped to continue research at the nation’s leading HLH center, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in cooperation with Liam’s Lighthouse Foundation.  LLF is another organization with local ties helping to fight HLH.  LLF was founded by Pittston native Michelle Schulze in memory of her son Liam, who also passed away from HLH.
The Carles, along with their families chose to honor Ethan’s memory and continue his legacy in loving support of all those who have earned their angel wings, for those currently fighting, and sadly those who will be affected.
“Ethan’s legacy will be making a difference and everything that Champ’s Cause accomplishes is because of him...we are just being the parents we would be if Ethan were still with us here.  He would have been taught to be compassionate and to help others.  As long as Champ’s Cause is alive and going, then so is Ethan.”
