The seventh annual conference for the NEPA Intergenerational Coalition is being held Friday, September 13, 2013 at the Woodlands Inn and Resort , 1073 Highway 315, Wilkes-Barre, Pa..

 Chairperson of the Conference for the second year in a row is Brenda Saba, a grandparent herself raising one child. The Coalition consists of a wide range of social service agencies and grandparents, and is chaired by Howard J. Grossman, current Fund Raising Director of the Pittston Memorial Library.

 The Library has taken over the responsibilities of administering the work of the Coalition with meetings being held in the Library conference room.

The Conference is free to grandparents. For professionals, the fee is $35 with checks payable to the GRG Fund of Luzerne Foundation. This year’s event will start at 8:15 AM and end at 3 PM. Sponsors include Loftus-Vergari and Associates, Inc, Pittston Memorial Library, Attorney John Terrana, Luzerne-Wyoming Counties Area Agency on Aging, Children’s Service Center, Institute for Human Services, NE Title and Tag…Edward J. and Maria Carter, Luzerne Foundation and one anonymous sponsor.

More than 165,000 children in Pennsylvania are being raised in households that are headed by grandparents. Such families, as well as those raised by other relative caregivers, face everyday challenges, struggles, and opportunities. To acquaint attendees with the various aspects of the growing demographic of grandparents raising grandchildren, special workshops are being held including Leesa Carlyon of Loftus-Vergari Associates on post-permanent adoption; Tom Foley of Family Service Association on HelpLine; Craig Piso of Piso and Associates on Healthy Power in Parenting; Cindy Loftus-Vergari of Loftus-Vergari Associates on Drawing Boundaries Between Parents and Custodial Grandparents; Mary Kobrick-Schell of Catholic Social Services on Parenting 101; and Joan Salla of Catholic Social Services on Role of Children and Youth.

Featured keynoter will be the Honorable Jennifer Rogers of the Luzerne County Court of Common Please. Judge Rogers was elected in 2011 and has been assigned to Family Court and handled numerous adoption petitions and custody-visitation issues involving grandparents raising grandchildren.

A special workshop titled Ask the Lawyer will feature Attorneys Larry MacDonald, Nicole  Bednarek, Fred Howe and Lisa Pierotti, all practicing in the area of family law. The final remarks will be provided by Rabbi Larry Kaplan of Temple Israel who has always given a message with humor at previous conferences.
