“A HEALTHY ME IS DRUG FREE” is the theme of the 2013 Lackawanna County Red Ribbon Campaign.  The Lackawanna Susquehanna Office of Drug and Alcohol Programs is participating in the National Red Ribbon Campaign week, by holding an awareness event on Courthouse Square on Friday, October 25th, from 11 AM – 2 PM.
Lackawanna County Commissioners Corey D. O’Brien, Jim Wansacz, and Patrick M. O’Malley will be issuing a Proclamation declaring October 25th as Red Ribbon Day in Lackawanna County on Courthouse Square, Washington Avenue Entrance at Noon. Students from West Scranton High School, Dunmore High School, Valley View, Mid-Valley, and North Pocono will be on hand to promote the event.
Since 1985, when Federal Agent Enrique Camarena was murdered by drug traffickers, the red ribbon has become a national symbol signifying an awareness of the dangers of drugs and a commitment to reduce their use.  The Red Ribbon Campaign's goal is to heighten awareness regarding the alcohol and other drug problems facing every community.  It also serves to unite communities in activities promoting a drug-free lifestyle and to build coalitions to implement prevention strategies.  The campaign focuses on the importance of successful prevention activities reaching all segments of the community to reduce the demand for drugs, such as parents, community groups, human service agencies, churches, youth, schools, businesses, law enforcement agencies, governments, senior citizens, service organizations, media, and health organizations.
National Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, October 26th, from 10 AM – 2 PM. The Following Police Departments are participating: Jefferson Township, Jermyn, Jessup, Moscow, Olyphant, Scranton, and Pennsylvania State Police, Throop R, Dunmore.
