Tips on extending the harvest
here we are again, we're in the garden with the Greenhouse Project, Jane Risse with me. Jane, we are getting ready for the harvest, but we also need to start thinking about extending that harvest, first frost, doesn't mean we're done?

(Jane)no!!, not at all. Some summer things are tender, and you can't go after the frost like tomatoes and peppers, eggplant.

(Josh)but what can go after that frost?

(Jane)broccoli, anything green. Think of the green vegetables, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, chinese cabbage.

(Josh)here we go with a little broccoli plant here. How do we know when it is ready to be cut?

(Jane)when the head is nice and full, and it is still a nice bright deep don't want to wait until it flowers. So if it starts to get too yellow, we long.

(Josh)how do we cut this?).

(Jane)basically you just come down here with a nice sharp, clean knife. And cut down about 2 inches below the head. The apex. And then, leave your plant. In all of these joints here, new broccoli heads are going to grow, flourettes.

(Josh)we down have to do anything after we cut that, just let it keep growing?

(Jane)that's right. Keep watering it, and keep using your fertilizer. Most greens like broccoli, can grow right through, till a hard frost.

(Josh)we can keep this going to maybe November, December?

(Jane) November- December easily.

(Josh) I'm surprised, i didn't know that. We are working our way from broccoli to cool season vegetables. Here we have Swiss chard. How do we keep this going?for as long as possible?

(Jane) You can cut from the outside. Biggest leaves on the outside. Work you way in. And continue to water and care for it like you normally would. Right up to a cold hard frost when it dies.

(Josh) So once we make the first cut, we don't need to do anything special afterwards?

(Jane) Continue mulching it, watering it, and fertilizing it. Just like you always did.

(Josh) Perfect Jane. Thank you so much. Maybe we will see you back here in December when we are still harvesting.

(Jane) Let's come check it OUT.

And we would also like to mention that the greenhouse project at nay aug is hosting a fundraiser to benefit Laurie's Community Garden.it will be held this coming Thursday, August 14th from 5:30 to 7:30 at Jack's Draft House on Prescott Avenue in Scranton.
