After Maryland (4-0, 0-0 ACC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead, the Nittany Lions (1-1, 0-0 ALC) made it a three-goal deficit midway through the first half while fighting as close to four goals on three additional occasions. Senior Mackenzie Cyr (Westminster, Md.) added a two-point contest (1g, 1a), while junior Kelly Lechner (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.) also scored.
The Nittany Lions out shot Maryland by a 36-31 margin and held a 12-4 caused turnover advantage. The Terrapins won 12-of-22 draw controls and went 2-for-4 on free-position shots. Freshman goalkeeper Cat Rainone (Newtown Square, Pa.) made three saves in the opening half, while sophomore Emi Smith (Denver, Colo.) turned aside 10 shots in relief.
After Brooke Griffin’s fourth goal 9:02 into the first half gave Maryland a 5-0 lead, Penn State answered with a pair of strikes to make it a 5-2 game. Mosketti opened the Nittany Lion scoring with 18:51 left in the half, and Smucker followed after converting Cyr’s pass less than two minutes later.
Maryland ended the opening 30 minutes on a 3-1 run en route to the 8-3 halftime advantage. After a pair of Terrapin goals, Mackenzie Cyr netted her second of the season with 10:37 left in the first. With 9:33 remaining, Maryland’s Kristen Lamon put the Terrapins up by five.
The second half started with a quick Maryland strike before Lechner and Madison Cyr scored at 51 seconds and 3:05, respectively, to make it a 9-5 game. Junior Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) gathered her second assist of the season on Cyr’s strike.
Maryland responded with a 5-2 run to end the game. Griffin added two of her seven goals to make it an 11-5 advantage before Madison Cyr netted her second of the game with 14:03 left in the contest. Smucker added her second with 12:16 left before Maryland scored the final three goals en route to the 14-7 final.
Penn State will return to action Tuesday, Feb. 25 when it hosts Duquesne at 7 p.m.
