ANNVILLE -- The King's College women's basketball placed three players on the 2013 All-Freedom Conference squad, which was released Thursday by the Middle Atlantic Conferences Office. Senior point-guard Katlin Michaels (Berwick/Berwick) was a first-team selection, senior shooting guard Celia Rader (Scranton/Scranton Prep) was a second-team choice, while senior forward Lindsay Atchison (Green Village, NJ/Chatham) earned honorable mention status.
The trio each played significant roles in helping King's to a 21-5 record and a berth in the Freedom Conference Tournament title game to be played Saturday. After reaching the NCAA Division III National Tournament Sweet 16 a year ago, Michaels, Rader, and Atchison are one victory away from leading the Lady Monarchs back to nationals for the second straight season.
Over the course of the past two seasons, the trio has helped guide King's to a combined 45-11 overall record as well as a 25-3 Freedom Conference mark.
Michaels was second in the Freedom Conference "Player of the Year" voting, behind sophomore Kyra Dayon of top-seeded FDU-Floprham, the team King's will face in Saturday's title game. A two-time first-team all-league choice, Michaels has enjoyed an outstanding senior year as she tops the Lady Monarchs in scoring, assists, and steals while ranking second on the team in rebounding. She posted season highs of 28 points, 11 rebounds, and eight steals while her 15 assists against Misericordia on February 12 is a new King's single-game record.
She currently averages 15.5 points per-game while her 7.2 assists average ranks her first nationally among all NCAA Division III players. Her 186 assists is also a new King's single-season record. In addition, Michaels averages 6.5 rebounds each contest while adding a team-high 3.5 steals. Michaels, who played only eight games as a freshman due to a torn ACL, has posted career marks of 1,030 points, 489 rebounds, 422 assists, and 236 steals.
Rader, meanwhile, earned second-team All-Freedom honors for the second time in her career. The senior sniper leads the Freedom Conference with 77 three-point field goals, tied for the second most in one season in program history. Her average of 2.92 three-pointers per-game ranks 10th nationally in Division III. This season Rader is averaging 13.8 points and 3.5 rebounds per-game while chipping in with 43 steals.
Over the course of her career Rader has totaled 1,088 points while her 208 career three-point field goals stands third all-time at King's. She has also contributed with 256 rebounds, 144 steals, 95 assists. She scored 20 or more points in six games this season.
Atchison proved her value to the team with her ability to play multiple positions. At 6-foot, Atchison has played virtually every position on the floor for King's and her ball-handling skills have been frequently utilized when opponents attempt to deny Michaels the ball. Atchison has enjoyed her best season at King's, averaging 10.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, and is second on the team behind Michaels with 2.3 assists per-game.
She has contributed 19 three-pointers, 39 steals, and a team-high 28 blocks. In her four years at King's, Atchison has tallied 775 points, 552 rebounds, 141 assists, and 139 steals, while chipping in with 68 three-pointers. She posted season-highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds her senior year.
King's will play for the Freedom Conference title on Saturday when the second-seeded Lady Monarchs travel to Madison, NJ to face top-seeded FDU-Florham at 1:00 p.m.
