*Bruce Katz Band plays Late Night Ramble at The Cooperage on Saturday, June 17

 A well-known Blues musician, a trio of ladies—“masters of three-part harmony”—and a spirited rock band will take the stage at the 12th annual Honesdale Roots & Rhythm Music & Arts Festival AND stay for a late night Ramble at 1030 Main Street! Doors open at 9:00pm, music starts at 10:00pm.

 

 

 *Seven musical acts from Pennsylvania will fill the air with music at Hazle Township Community Park on June 17. WoodShock IV featuring Hazleton-based band Shock Value is hosting six other bands and artists to showcase the talent of musicians, local and regional. Non-profit groups will provide food and refreshments

The lineup will be: Molly Carnish, singer/songwriter, Tamaqua; Ace & the Kings, punk, Bloomsburg; Luke McManus, singer/songwriter, Lehighton; Shatter Influence, rock, Hazleton; Less Fuschia, indie punk, Stroudsburg; Billy Pfeifer of Egocentric Plastic Men, pop-punk, Philadelphia; and Shock Value, indie rock, Hazleton. Chris Jones, a comedian from Stroudsburg, will emcee the event.

The event will begin at 4 p.m., and will go until dusk.

JUNE 2017

 *On Saturday June 24 and Sunday June 25, Eckley Miner’s Village, 2 Eckley Main Street, Weatherly will host a 19th Century Base Ball Weekend as part of Eckley’s Patch Town Days Irish Fest.

Activities take place from 10-7 on Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday.  There will be food, Irish steppers, crafts, displays, music, and a beer tent.  A St. Patrick’s Parade will be held Saturday at 2PM. 

Base Ball games are 11AM and 3PM on Sat--Sun at 11AM and 1PM.  All players will be attired in 19th Century uniforms, using equipment reproductions of the period and following 1964 baseball rules.

On Monday, June 19th, the Jazz Assassins, two musicians familiar to audiences of the Wayne County Creative Arts Council summer concerts in Honesdale’s Central Park are going back to their roots of contemporary jazz, gypsy jazz and even rock ‘n’ roll. Come early to spread out your blanket or claim a choice spot in the Park to enjoy something old, yet new.  The concert starts at 7:30, but food and ice cream is available from 7pm.  The concert is free, however a free will collection will be made.  In the case of inclement weather, listen to 95.3 WDNH or check out WCCAC’s Facebook page.  The rain location will be the Cooperage on Main St. Honesdale.  

 

*On Thursday, June 22nd, the Wayne County Creative Arts Council welcomes back Fiddlin’ Around, an off shoot of the larger group The Old Time Fiddlers, who have been hosted by the WCCAC for over 36 years.

Honesdale’s Central Park is the site of all the merriment so bring a chair or blanket and relax and enjoy the music.  The music starts at 7:30, but come a bit early to grab a hot dog or piece of pizza and finish it off with a cup of home made ice cream. The concerts are free, however a free will collection will be taken.  In case of rain, check with 95.3 WDNH or the WCCAC Facebook page  the rain location for this concert will be at the Episcopal Parish Hall on Church St. Honesdale

South Schuylkill Garden Club announces a garden tour of the Pine Grove Area.  This will be a first of hopefully many tours to come as the Garden Club explores the many beautiful gardens in the southern region of Schuylkill County.  The tour is slated for June 24 rain or shine.  The tour consists of eight private and two public gardens in and around the Pine Grove Area.  The tour will be operational within the hours of 9AM to 2PM.  Tickets for the tour may be purchased at one of the two tour starting places.  First up for tickets is at the Butterfly Garden at the Union Canal in Pine Grove Proper.  The second available place to start your tour providing tickets is east of Pine Grove at 167 Dad Burnham Road Pine Grove.  This is the Gardens of Kenneth and Ardela Newswanger.  Advanced tickets may be purchased at the Pine Grove Theater or by contacting Carol at 570.345.2423, Jeanne at 570.385.4423 or Helen at 570.739.3689.

*More than 50 local elementary school students will showcase a variety of original creative works in the “Young Artists” exhibition being held through July 14 in the Widmann Gallery at King’s College.  The exhibit is coordinated by award winning artist Sue Hand, who holds an honorary doctorate of humanities from King’s College. A reception will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, June 16, in the Widmann Gallery in the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center, located between North Franklin and North Main streets. 

The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Sat. and Sun., as arranged. The Gallery is closed on national holidays.

 

*The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps is hosting their annual "An Evening with the Corps" drum corps show at Wyoming Area HS Stadium, 120 Boston Avenue, West Pittston, PA 18627 on Saturday, June 24, 2017. 

The Drum Corps Associates-sanctioned show starts at 7:00 P.M. but gates open at 5:00 P.M. so that competitors and fans can enjoy a meal and mingle with drum corps friends before the show.  The Skyliners will be premiering their 2017 Production, "XSCAPE" at their home show. *SUN P.E.T.S. will be holding a Dog & Cat Rabies Vaccination Clinic at the Fireman's Carnival Grounds in Beavertown on Saturday, June 17 from 1 to 3 pm. *Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Peter Cetera will headline the Misericordia University Under the Stars Summer Arts Festival when he performs time-honored hits, such as “The Glory of Love,’’ “No Explanation,’’ and “Restless Heart’’  during the Starlight Concert on Saturday, July 29 in the Wells Fargo Amphitheater. The concert begins at 8 p.m. The Under the Stars Summer Arts Festival also will present Emily Asher’s Garden Party during the Sounds of Summer concert on Sunday, July 23 at 8 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Amphitheater. *Honesdale, PA – ARCHANGEL AIRBORNE hosts its “5th Annual Community Outreach Day” at Cherry Ridge Airport, 30 Bomber Lane (just off the Owego Turnpike), Honesdale, on Saturday, July 15. Events will take place at TML Aircraft’s hangar.

It’s a fun-filled day for the entire family from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. featuring plane rides, flight simulator, raffles, demonstrations, live entertainment by Rare Form, food and more. A $1 donation is requested. All event proceeds benefit Archangel Airborne, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Last year’s crowd pleasing aerial demonstration by the T-34 Mentors are expected to return.

*The annual Community Day celebration being slated for Saturday, July 8 at the Blanche D. Price Park in the Village of Pocono Pines in Tobyhanna Township is expanding with additional arts displays, creative crafts and a wide array of ethnic and contemporary food vendors. The 2017 event will feature two regional entertainment venues including “Organized Resistance” and “Alibi” will grace the main stage from 2 until Dusk.  Once again, the event will conclude with a spectacular evening fireworks display which will be held following sundown. *The Weis Center for the Performing Arts, in collaboration with the Samek Art Museum at Bucknell University, is currently hosting a free coal-themed photography exhibit in its Atrium Lobby. Entitled “Dust and Light” the exhibit includes 38 photographs from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) showing candid life in coal mining communities in the late 1930s. The exhibit will remain open to the public through Friday, July 14 at 4 p.m.

  For the 11th consecutive year, Keystone College will celebrate The Gathering from July 14-16 on campus.    The Gathering is an annual three-day symposium on creativity and imagination with performances, lectures, discussions, and workshops. This year’s event, “Finding the Better Angels of Our Nature,” will explore ways of finding common ground among bitter rivals. Ideological differences in politics, religion, race, and scientific and cultural issues have deeply divided many Americans and have come to characterize our culture. Participants at The Gathering will explore ways to restore respect and acceptance among people and reconnect with the best ideals of our country.

August 2017

*David Lawrence Duchnick was always willing to lend a helping hand. The organ donor and volunteer firefighter was working as a tow truck operator—a family business and a job he loved—when he sustained a severe spinal cord injury in a tragic accident on Route 81 last August.  Duchnick died from his injuries on August. 8 at only 29 years of age, but his spirit of giving and sense of community live on. To honor his memory his family and friends are partnering with the American Red Cross to host the inaugural David Lawrence Duchnick Memorial Blood Drive on Friday, June 2 from 1-6 p.m. at the Joe Terry Civic Center, 1038 Montdale Road, Scott Township. *Eastburg Community Alliance is looking for entertainers to display their talents at the depot during the months of June, July, August and September.  We specifically are looking for local artists to volunteer to perform during Music on Mondays at Dansbury Depot.  If you or anyone you know, know anyone who is interested; please email Sonya Cole at scole@ptd.net.  We do not pay our performers but do take a collection at each concert for the performer.

*The NAMI Scranton & Northeast Region support group is for anyone who has been affected by mental illness.   Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month in The Advocacy Alliance Media Building at 841 Jefferson avenue in Scranton.  The February meetings will be on February 13th & 27th, meeting registration is not required. The meetings are a ‘Caring & Sharing’ format and we do have a pass rule- you do not have to participate, you can pass if you are not comfortable yet.   These meetings are free and open to anyone who has a mental illness and/or their friends and family.
