Middle Smithfield Township, Monroe County – The Conway family helped build the Resica Community Playground 18 years ago. Now, they’re helping to tear it down. With tears in her eyes, Karen Conway sniffled, "It is very hard."

The community park is on East Stroudsburg Area School District property. The district’s insurance company will no longer cover playgrounds made with pressure-treated lumber because it may cause cancer. So volunteers are knocking it down then building a new and safer playground in the same location behind Resica Elementary School.

Each piece that comes down seems to hold a special memory for people like John Conway. He was two-years-old when the playground opened. "For it to come down it's kind of sad to see it go but in the same way it's kind of good for it to go for a new generation of kids,” he said.

The new play area will feature interactive activities, a toddler space, and an amphitheater.  "It will be all around a good playground,” said John. Karen added, “I think a lot more kids will be able to play on it and enjoy themselves and have a great time."

Construction on the new playground will begin July 9th.

There is a fundraiser for the project Sunday, June 29th at Pub 570 in Bushkill. It’s a buffet dinner, Lego building contest, and silent auction. It runs from 4p.m. – 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children.

Volunteers are also planning a golf fundraiser for October 9th at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort. They are still working out the details.
