Tribute held for slain Wilkes-Barre postal worker

Friends rememb er Laurie Merritt

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - Co-workers of a U.S. Postal Service worker who died three years ago Saturday in an unsolved arson want to make sure she's not forgotten.

U.S. Postal workers released purple balloons outside the Wilkes-Barre post office on South Main Street. It was a tribute to former letter carrier Laurie Merritt, whose favorite color was purple.

The 51 year old Wilkes-Barre woman died inside her Wyoming Street home in April, 2014 when someone intentionally set fire to it.

Her co-workers fondly looked back on her life on this tragic anniversary.

"She was great," said Pete Riley, president of the local postal workers union. "She was alsays there, she would give you the shirt off her back for you. She would do anything for you."

"A great worker, remembered George Hall. "Came in everyday, did her job, smiled all day long, really a treat to work with."

A key piece of evidence salvaged from the fire is Merritt's iPhone.

Eyewitness News learned earlier this week that law enforcement purchased new equipment, hoping to unlock the phone and hopefully learn something that may help solve the fatal arson.
