Transportation departments send a strong message during national work zone safety week

DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)-- It's national "Work Zone Safety Week" and transportation departments want to send a strong message to drivers.

In our region, it hits very close to home as three PennDot workers were struck earlier this week.

The unofficial flower of Pennsylvania is in bloom, the orange blossom, or orange cone. Now that winter is over, drivers are going to see more of this as construction season is underway.

"Really all that is between a vehicle and a man or a woman who is working on the road is a small, orange cone," Safety Press Officer of PennDot, James May said.

On Tuesday, that orange cone wasn't a loud enough signal. On route 80 in Monroe County a tractor trailer hit a car, which then struck 3 PennDot workers.

"Be alert to the speed reduction that is requested in the work zone, that's the number one thing to be alert of that speed reduction," Safety Press Officer PennDot, Michael Taluto said.

If you get caught speeding in a work zone, the fines are doubled and you could lose your license for 15 days. And don't think you're going to get away with breaking the law.

"Because of what happened in the past, because of what happened recently, local and state police are out there enforcing aggressive driving in the work zone," Safety Press Officer of PennDot Michael Taluto said.

The reason for the stiff rules, making sure everyone gets home safely.

"They want to get home to their families just as much as we want to get to wherever we are going. Just a reminder to all of us of the importance of slowing down in these work zones and being careful,"   Safety Press Officer of PennDot, James May said.
