'Toys For Tots' Thief Sentenced in Monroe County

His crimes aren't confined to the Poconos

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - Police say he stole from waitresses and children in need. The brazen thief wasn't on the run for long, and he was sentenced Friday in Monroe County.

Michael Moya will spend 31 to 75 months in state prison. All he had to say about it on his way out of court was, "Pennsylvania!"

The Arlington Diner's owner is satisfied with the judge's decision.

"Maybe he can think about what he did and hopefully turn his life around," says George Halas, Arlington Diner owner.

Moya admitted to stealing a Toys for Tots donation bin, and $300 bucks inside, from the Stroud Township business last December. Surveillance caught the 'Grinch' in action.

Halas adds, "you know, to steal from Toys for Tots during Christmas time? It was disheartening."

Investigators say Moya also swiped tip jar money from restaurants, merchandise from stores, three motorcycles from a garage, and an atv from a house. He boldly jumped the counter at Rite Aid to steal prescriptions, too.

"Mr. Moya came into this community and just wreaked havoc on it over a very short period of time," says Julieane Fry, Assistant District Attorney.

Authorities say after Moya plead guilty to all charges, he fled to Baltimore, Maryland. He was extradited back to Monroe County last month.

"He has no conscience, he doesn't care about the community," Fry explains.

In court, Moya claimed his actions were fueled by a drug addiction. The District Attorney's Office has a different opinion.

Fry adds, "he's addicted to stealing, and that's it."

Before his crime spree in Monroe County, Moya received serious sentences for crimes in other states. In Maryland, he was released early from a ten year sentence for burglary.
