"The State Walker" braves bitter cold to raise awareness for child abuse

College student walks from Wilkes-Barre to Scranton to raise awareness

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - With temperatures barely in the teens Friday, a college student who calls himself "The State Walker" bundled up and walked more than 17 miles between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton.

He was joined by a few friends.

"It's honestly just the motivation of my friends behind me, my family and friends up in the University of Scranton right now and knowing that that what we're doing is meant for something better," The State Walker said.

At a time when most people do anything they can to stay indoors, we followed him from the streets near Pittston through Moosic to the moment he finished up at the University of Scranton.

"The pain that we feel while we're walking is nothing compared to what the children feel," The State Walker said.

"The State Walker" is hoping to raise awareness for the issue of child abuse. He teamed up with the Children's Advocacy Center and the non-profit organization Marley's Mission for his effort.

"When I woke up this morning and I saw how cold it was, I was thankful that I had not agreed to join on this but I'm very, very grateful that he suited up today," Marley's Mission founder April Kemp said.

As he walked, "The State Walker" not only battled the cold but he also carried nearly forty pounds in weight, most of which symbolizes one pound for the 38 children who lost their lives as a direct result of child abuse last year.

"Child abuse is a community problem so it requires a community response," Jess Farrell with the Children's Advocacy Center said.
