The Problem with Potholes

(WBRE/WYOU-TV) Why so many potholes?  Could PennDOT and local street crews be using different fill material that is not holding up? Two state lawmakers and drivers want answers. PennDOT answers those concerns.  The I-Team’s Andy Mehalshick has the story,

"You know what this year is the worst I’ve seen. I think it's been a lot worse than previous year’s most definitely."  Said Mike Smeraglio, of Wilkes-Barre.

And that's what we heard over and over again today from drivers like Mike Smeraglio from Wilkes-Barre.   "You know what I think it's pretty ridiculous."

So what's the deal?. Potholes like these in Wilkes-Barre are filled one day and in a very short time. They are once again open craters. State lawmakers Representative Tarah Toohil and Senator Lisa Baker say they are getting an earful from constituents.

"Clearly what people are seeing on the ground is a condition that is very troubling. They're concerned that their tax dollars are being wasted on a mix that isn't doing the right job for our citizens." Said Senator Baker, a Republic from Luzerne County

"Especially now as we are going into the paving season PennDOT and the Department of Transportation is spending a lot of money. We want to make sure with the right type of asphalt."  Added Tarah Toohil, a Republican from Luzerne County

"Well, the crews are not using any different materials than they used in the past." So says PennDOT spokesman James May. So what do the potholes seem to be bigger and deeper than ever?

"What we are seeing this year just look at this weather. Earlier this week it was 80 degrees, later this week it's supposed to be in the 30's and we have rain in between that. That is a primary recipe for a pothole right there."

May told us, hot patch will be used on the potholes when the weathers stays at 40 and above for several days.
