Teenagers struck by vehicle stay positive during hospitalization

MAHANOY CITY, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- Early Sunday morning two teenage girls were standing outside of a house on East Mahanoy Avenue. Some friends had pulled up in a jeep to chat. That's when the girls spotted a car speeding on a one-way street, going the wrong way. The girls yelled out to the driver -- letting him know he was going the wrong way. The driver, 33-year-old Francis Green - swerved, reversed direction, and while speeding away-- struck the jeep, then hit the two girls.

"It was very early in the morning, but still it doesn't matter. If they're walking around town, they're walking around town. You shouldn't have to worry about getting hit," said Andre Negron, who lives on the street and knows the victims.

The car hit 17-year-old Ashley Yakimovich, a senior at Mahanoy Area High School.

Then the car ran over 19-year-old Rachel Hillman.

After the crash, Green fled the scene, running to his house on West Centre Street. When police arrived at his house, he tried to flee again -- going out a window and onto the roof, but police were able to grab him. Green is charged with aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence.

The two girls were flown to area hospitals -- both in critical condition. Ashley had many broken bones, internal bleeding and severe head trauma.  She is now conscious -- but has a metal rod in her neck. Rachel now has permanent metal rods in both her legs.

"It's too young to go through stuff like that," said Negron.

Despite the pain, the girls are staying positive.

"Ashley's the kind of person that it's not going to keep her down. She's going to keep trying to do the things she did before," said Sally Christensen, Ashley's family friend.

For Ashley, that means playing softball and basketball.

"I hope they get better," said Negron.

The driver, Francis Green, is out of prison on 25-thousand dollars bail.

Both girls remain hospitalized at this time.
