Teen sentenced for deadly stabbing in Scranton

Cathleen Boyer to spend seven to 20 years in state prison

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - A teenage girl, who admitted stabbing and killing her friend last year in Scranton, will spend years in state prison.

Cathleen Boyer was sentenced to between seven and 20 years in prison Wednesday afternoon.

Boyer was just 16 years old at the time of the crime.

She cried in court saying that she is sorry for what happened and is not a bad person.

Boyer also asked for forgiveness from the family of victim Kayla Van Wert.

"Unfortunately a young, young woman lost her life and now her infant daughter has to live without a mother," Assistant District Attorney Drew Krowiak said.

In May 2016, Boyer stabbed the victim multiple times during a fight on McKenna Court in Scranton's Hill Section.

The dispute started on Facebook over a boy and then led to a street fight.

Boyer's attorney called the situation "senseless and stupid," saying the victim and suspect were friends and together just days before.

"They're all friends. They all ran around together up there in the Hill Section, at each others houses all the time and then this thing came up with this boyfriend," defense attorney Chris Osborne said.

Boyer was only 16 years old at the time of the deadly stabbing. She was a high school sophomore.

Her attorney says she has been sorry since the incident happened but could not express that guilt until now.

"I tried to visit with her and every time she couldn't speak with me because she was crying so hysterically," Osborne said.

Prosecutors hope as tragic as this case is, it can send a message to other young people to think before they act.

"Unfortunately this has to happen to be a deterrent for young kids, basically kids, that's how old these girls were," Krowiak said.

Boyer pleaded guilty to third degree murder in this case.

She will be given credit for time served which means she will spend at least another six years behind bars before being eligible for parole.

Boyer maintains she was defending herself at the time of the deadly stabbing in Scranton.
