Polk Township, Monroe County – Students and staff at an area elementary school are trying to cope with the aftermath of a fatal crash. Pleasant Valley Elementary School teacher Michael Sauers is in the hospital recovering from a Monday night crash. His wife, Carola Seiler, died in the wreck.

PVE Principal Joshua Krebs said, "[Mike] is a caring and absolutely wonderful person. Kids are very important to Mike." A police car hit Sauer’s vehicle Monday night. “It was a shock to everyone,” said Krebs. "The building is really like a family."

Sauers has taught in the Pleasant Valley School District for about two decades. He currently teaches second grade. Krebs said, “Although Mike may not have a large family outside of family outside of school, Mike has a really large family here."

The school was supposed to have a teacher appreciation event today but they weren't really feeling up to celebrating in light of the circumstances. So instead they focused their effort on helping Sauers."Our staff have just been outstanding when it comes to coming together and supporting one another,” said Kreb.

They are filling a wishing well with cards and donations, including money that they had planned to spend on the teacher appreciation party. A guidance counselor gently explained the situation to students and is helping them cope with any concerns they have.

For security reason, the school is not collecting donations from the public.
