SPCA takes dog back after it escapes from new home

Tamaqua family fighting to get their dog back

TAMAQUA, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- A local single father of two brought home a husky over the weekend. He says it was a "match made in heaven"... until the dog ran away. Now, the family is fighting the SPCA for the dog.

Inside the McGeehan house in Tamaqua, you'll find an empty dog crate, treats, food, and a leash, but no dog. Sean McGeehan and his kids brought home "Electra" on Saturday from the Hillside SPCA in Pottsville.

"I just fell in love with her," said McGeehan.

He tells me, it was the perfect fit -- until Sunday morning. Electra was in the kitchen with McGeehan's 11-year-old daughter when she escaped.

He goes on to tell me his daughter ran out after the dog, then he jumped in the car, chasing after both of them on the busy streets of Tamaqua.

"The biggest thing is we were not notified immediatley," said Dana Smith-Mansell, with the SPCA.

The SPCA found out from someone else, and they responded, catching the dog and bringing it back to the shelter.

McGeehan tells me he would have called, but says it all happened too fast.

Now, he and his kids want Electra back.

"This is one isolated incident, just one time and I'm just begging," said McGeehan.

But volunteers and employees at the SPCA don't think going back to their home is in the dog's best interest.

"We try to do the best by the animals here and we try to do the best for the families. The staff just felt it was not a good fit," said Mansell.

But the family stays hopeful.

"I'm already thinking and making preventative measures in case they do change their minds," said McGeehan.

Saying he could add extra locks to the door; asking the SPCA to check out his house, and give his family another chance.

"It's just wrong. I just want the dog back," said McGeehan.

"She is safe and I think that is the most important thing," said Mansell.

The adoption contract in which the adopter signs at the SPCA states that the SPCA has the right to immediate possession of the animal if they see fit.

SPCA workers tell us the dog has already been adopted by someone else with husky experience.
