Tafton, Pike County: During the summer you see plenty of activity on the lake. But just because its winter time doesn’t mean that there isn’t fun to be had in Tafton, Pike County. It’s just that the water skiing comes in another form.
It’s a site that any ski resort loves to see. A bus load of people racing to make the first tracks of the day in the snow covering the trails. And this weekend will have plenty of freshly groomed trails to offer the skier and snowboarder. Now that we are finally in a colder weather pattern even some of the smaller local resorts have 100 percent of their trails open. I’m here at Tanglewood overlooking the beautiful Lake Wallenpaupack.
Tanglewood resort sits along the hills that ring the lake. It may only have 7 slopes, but this locally owned resort has been in the skiing business for over 40 years. It focuses on the basics of skiing. Allen Crouthamel, owner of Tanglewood Resort stated “Our nitch market is for beginners and intermediate family type resort well suited for groups, beginners, and intermediate skiers.”
While the warm weather caused them to miss 2 to 3 weeks of traditionally opportune skiing time, Tanglewood is 100% open for business this weekend. “Since the cold weather has moved in we’ve been making snow around the clock. Our snowmakers have opened 4 additional trails and our snow tubing park for additional groups. We are looking forward to opening our terrain park this weekend” explained Crouthamel.
A week and a half worth of sub freezing temperatures along with our first natural snow has done wonders for local conditions. If you can brave the temperatures this weekend, you’ll find the best conditions yet this season waiting for you on the slopes. Tanglewood will have all 7 of their trails open. Camelback will have the most with 26 of their 33 trails open for the weekend. Jack Frost and Big Boulder will have 100% of their terrain open and available for day & night skiing respectively. Big Bear, which picked up a couple inches of natural snow this week, will have at least 15 trails for the weekend. Elk will ski from 8:30 a.m. to 10 pm with 15 trails also.
The Arctic cold will relax after today and there is a good chance for more natural snow over the weekend as a clipper swings by. With another Arctic blast expected next week, you’d expect plenty of resorts with 100% of their terrain opened for next weekend.
