Weston, Luzerne County: With the recent bitterly cold weather, hitting the ski slopes might not be at the top of your list of things to do. But there is one local resort where you can warm-up and relax in style after a hard day of skiing.
Just five miles southwest of Hazleton on the Luzerne/Schuylkill County line sits Eagle Rock Resort. This 6600 acre resort offers a four season outdoor experience with fantastic views of the Blue Mountain Valley. You can golf or fish in the warmer months. But when winter sets in, the slopes are open for weekend skiing. Eagle Rock has a snow board park along with a half-pipe for you boarders. All 14 lighted trails are now 100% open for all skiing levels. Plus you can also enjoy snow tubing.
Joyce Bertrand, General Manager of Eagle Rock Resort, explained "It's a great family resort. The lift lines aren't as long as some of the other larger ski places." With Valentines Day about a week away, I've got the perfect gift for both the indoor and outdoor winter enthusiast. Start by enjoying the picturesque mountain views from the cozy comfort of the lodge. Or perhaps after charging down the mountain, you could warm up and relax at the spa.
While the ski slopes won't be open for Valentines Day, Eagle Rock Resort could still fit into you plans. "We have overnight packages that include dinner and we also have dinner on Valentines Day" stated Bertrand.
But before we get to Valentines Day next week, there's plenty of terrain to ski this weekend. This prolonged period of cold weather has allowed just about every local ski resort to get all of their winter sports areas open. From the slopes to the tubing runs, just about everything they offer is open for business. Shawnee all week has been offering a take your son or daughter to the slopes pass. This weekend they ski on 22 trails with a 30 to 60" base. Big Boulder offers the deepest base with 78" being reported on some of their 13 trails. If down hill skiing isn't your thing, how about cross country skiing. Crystal Lake in Sullivan County has up to 9" of natural snow covering their 30 kilometers of trails.
The cold and mostly dry weather pattern will persist through this weekend. But looking ahead, a slight change in the weather pattern will at least offer us our best chance all winter for some bigger snow storms.
