Senators introduce "BlueAlert" bill

KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - Any emergency situation is available right at your fingertips as long as you're signed up to Kingston's Code Red alert system. While this tool has been used primarily to keep the public safe, state senators Randy Vulakovich and John Rafferty want to to establish a "Blue Alert" system in Pennsylvania to help better protect law enforcement. If an officer is in danger, an alert could go out immediately through texts, news stations and highway message signs  - just like an amber alert.

"We've seen in other states where it's been used, it's been very effective in finding those suspects who have done harm to a police officer," said Senator Rafferty. At least 29 other states have this system in place using the National Blue Alert Network. That is voluntary. But lawmakers say the newly introduced Pennsylvania bill would require local state police to set it up. Officers recognize community policing is essential and they say the bill could be one more tool to keep their brothers and sisters in blue safe.

"If we have 15,000 residents, that's 30,000 eyes. Without the public we can't do what is that we do. Like they say, if you see something, say something," said Kingston Police Chief Michael Krzywicki.
