Scranton Community Holds Vigil to Support Refugees and Immigrants

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- The pews at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Scranton were packed with people of all faiths, coming together to open their arms to immigrants and refugees.

"To us it's very important to come out, be loud not hide and join the resistance and say we're not going to accept what's going on," said Adan Jesus Marin, local activist.

Speakers addressed the diverse crowd of concerned citizens. One topic, the recently overturned executive order that would have banned travel from predominantly Muslim countries.

"There's a lot of Islam-aphobia that is causing genuine fear," said Marwan Wafa, American-Muslim academic.

"Discussing concerns about the youth -- at schools especially being bullied and getting called names... trying to educate everyone," said Ibrahim Almecky, with the Islamic Assoc. of NEPA.

Many people believe the key to change is education, and say that starts with events like this.

"This is the beauty of this country -- stand up and say your opinion," said Ibrahim Almecky.

The crowd lit candles as a symbol of solidarity, and took their message to the streets of Scranton.

"I hope that people will leave the church today and look for a Muslim or someone they fear from and get to know them on a personal level. After all, we're all descendants of Adam and Eve -- which means we're all brothers and sisters," said Wafa.
