School restructuring plan could cut teachers

MOUNTAIN TOP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- Big changes could be coming to a school district in Luzerne County.

The Crestwood School Board is considering restructuring its schools, which may involve laying off more than a dozen teachers.

Superintendent Joseph Gorham said the bottom line is the school district has a serious money problem.

He said the worst-case scenario could transform Fairview Elementary School and Rice Elementary School, which right now are grades K through 6, into Fairview Primary Campus, which would be K through 3, and Rice Intermediate Campus for pre-K and grades 4 through 6.

But for the district to save approximately $1.1-million per year, there's a potential to layoff 13 teachers, 8 primary and 5 secondary.

This plan would also reduce the school day for students by 30 minutes, but the superintendent said the district would still exceed the state requirements.

No action was taken at Thursday night's meeting, but a decision could be coming soon.
