Saturday's annual 'Special Needs Easter Egg Hunt'

Liberty Township, Montour County (WBRE/WYOU) Easter weekend is upon us and there will be a lot of children out collecting eggs.

If you can't wait until Sunday there is a hunt for those who have special needs Saturday.

Since 2015 a Christmas tree farm near Danville has provided thousands of eggs for those who have disability. It's interesting where they place the eggs.

With a skid steer and a helping hand. 100 construction cones are being placed in a field at Kohl's Stony Hill Tree Farm. For Saturday afternoon's Fourth Annual Special Needs Easter Egg Hunt.

"Knowing even a simple thing such as an egg hunt is a huge challenge for some of them," said Stan Kohl, owner of the farm.

Around 200 special needs and their siblings come to participate in something many of us take for granted. Rather than hiding the eggs in the grass they are placed on top of the cones for east access.

"The kids can reach out get the eggs themselves and it gives them that level of independence they've always or they do not always have," said Janine McWilliams.

McWilliams is the co-owner of Kidsworks Therapy Center in Lewisburg where she is an occupational therapist for children with special needs. McWilliams teamed up with her uncle stan to help provide for the ones who she cares for and the cones just came to mind.

"We used cones for a lot of things in therapy that we do with our kids. It was kind of a natural thing," said McWilliams.

The unique event continues inside the egg. Just like Halloween Easter is a candy free-for-all for many other hunts. Inside these eggs it's a mixture.

McWilliams showed Eyewitness News reporter Cody Butler the eggs and said "like some have stickers, some have candy and some are going to have numbers."

The numbers will grant the recipients with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguin tickets, gift baskets, candy, toys and a lot more.

You'll have to find that right number to get a special prize. It's all in good fun. "Yeah! That's my hope that they come here and enjoy themselves," said Kohl.

Following the Special Easter Egg Hunt Saturday there will be an adult hunt at 3:30-5:00

Ages up to 10 will start at 1:00 PM

Ages 11 to 16 will start at 1:30 PM

Ages 16 and up start at 2:30 PM
