Roundabout Construction in Delaware Water Gap

PennDOT says work will wrap up in November

DELAWARE WATER GAP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - A big project is planned for a small borough in the Poconos.

When you get off and on Interstate 80 in Delaware Water Gap, drivers say the ramps are tricky.

"They have been in disrepair for many years," says Susan Cooper of Village Farmer & Bakery.

"The ramps are bad, they are terrible," adds Ray Turick of Stroudsburg.

PennDOT says the on and off ramps of Exit 310 are being replaced. "That's really, really great news," Cooper explains.

There's also plans to replace a signalized intersection where the ramps meet with a roundabout.

"We're not a high traffic area, but maybe someday so I guess it's for the future," Cooper suggests.

But not everyone is happy.

"Ask anybody, who wants the circle? There's not enough traffic for it," Turick adds.

Susan Cooper runs Village Farmer and Bakery in Delaware Water Gap. She hopes the construction doesn't scare away customers. She explains, "it's kind of scary for businesses. We're afraid we might lose some business, but we're going to get a real easy detour."

Cooper says a lot of tourists stop in after visiting the borough's Welcome Center. But, that facility has been closed for renovations since last November.

"It's been a little stressful worrying about how the business is going to be," Cooper adds.

These big improvements come at a big cost, but local businesses hope they pay off in the long run.

This is a $14 million dollar project, expected to be complete in November. PennDOT says overnight lane restrictions during the week are already in place on Interstate 80.
