Richard Gere to appear at Montrose film festival

Festival raising money for local theater

MONTROSE, SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - A film festival this weekend in Susquehanna County is bringing in a famous face and a lot of excitement.

Actor Richard Gere will be in northeastern Pennsylvania this weekend raising money for the Montrose Theater.

The theater opened in 1921.

It's marquee has seen better days and that is why a non-profit group is now raising money to try and restore it.

Many call the Montrose Theater the "gem" of their community but the sign outside has seen better days.

Just ask Doug Overfield who often has to repair it.

"We've had to climb up on this marquee here lots of times in the winter time and we just decided we need to do something to fix it!" Doug Overfield said.

In an effort to start raising the necessary $40,000 for a new sign, the Montrose Restoration Committee is holding a four-day film festival, celebrating the movies of Richard Gere.

The actor has family roots in Susquehanna County.

Gere will even personally introduce a showing of "Pretty Woman" Saturday night at Montrose High School.

Vera Scroggins already has her tickets.

"Yes, I plan to go tomorrow night and listen to him and meet him. I've met him before so it'll be nice to see him again," Scroggins said.

Volunteers have been working to keep the 120-seat theater open.

They've already replaced the roof and installed a digital projector and many in Montrose say all the work is worth it.

"This is the only theater between Tunkhannock and Vestal (New York) from here!" Matt Sydlosky of Bridgewater Township said.

Every person in town has a personal story of what the theather means to them so preserving every part of it is important.

"My first date was here actually growing up. The first time I ever had a girlfriend!" Sydlosky said.

Nine different Richard Gere movies will be shown throughout the extended Columbus Day weekend.

Tickets are still available.
