Questions surround new hires at Hazleton Area Schools

HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- Where's the money?  That's what some people in a Luzerne County community want to know.

Teachers and parents packed into Thursday night's Hazleton Area School Board meeting, demanding answers.

The district voted to hire eight people for nearly $600,000 worth of salaries.

Superintendent Brian Uplinger said because of retirements, Hazleton Area will save more than $1-million over the course of the next six years, even after hiring those positions.

But before the board approved the appointments, they first voted to suspend all hiring policies.

The superintendent said that the people who were hired already had interviews on the record, but he wasn't sure why others didn't have an opportunity to apply.

The teachers also brought up a lot of other issues, including cramped classrooms, old textbooks, and dated technology.

Members of the school board agreed to discuss those problems and address them as soon as possible.
