Stabbing results in deadly end of a love triangle

The coroner was called to the Marion Terrace Apartments in Hanover Township

HANOVER TWP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)--A Luzerne County neighborhood was awakened this morning by terrifying screams as a man is stabbed to death.

The violence unfolded in Hanover Township and investigators say it was the deadly end of a love triangle.

Friends of the accused and the victims tell Eyewitness News they feared something bad was going to happen and it did early this morning inside the apartment at the Marion Terrace Apartments. 

"I know there was a love triangle going on with her and my nephew..," said Christina who is the Aunt of the victim.

The Aunt of the murder victim, 18-year-old Joseph Lewis says he was having an affair with a woman who lives next to her at the Marion Terrace Apartments...the woman, identified by Police is the fiance of 30-year-old James Carter. 

"I told him he was breaking up the family and he was-- they kept it going on," Christina said.

It did end early Wednesday morning when detectives say Cater came to the apartment and demanded to be let inside. His finance opened the door and according to arrest papers and argument broke out, Cater attacked Lewis, stabbing him three times. Cater admitted to the killing. 

Hanover Township Police took him into custody at the murder scene. He was covered in blood. Three young girls ages 3, 5, and 9 were inside the home when the violence erupted. Christina says they are children of Cater and the woman. They were not injured.

"I couldn't imagine my kids waking up to that. I mean I feel bad for the kids," Christina said.

The mortally wounded Lewis ran out of the house bleeding and collapsed on the sidewalk. The woman carried him back into the house, where he died. Peter Hodgson was friends with Cater and Lewis. He said he could see the hatred growing between the two in recent weeks.

According to court documents, Cater told the first police officers who arrived on the scene that he hopes Lewis doesn't make it. He has been living with the woman for the past 10 years. 

Cater is locked up without bail, he will have a preliminary hearing in two weeks. He faces life in prison if convicted of this crime.

UPDATE: Police say at approximately 5am this morning, the Hanover Township Police Department was dispatched to the 700 block of Marion terrace Apartments on the repot of a person stabbed.

Officers located an unresponsive male lying on the ground near the complex.

Officers were approached by a male, with blood on his hands and face who advised he was involved in the incident.

James Cater, 30, of Hanover Township was placed into custody without incident. The 18-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation revealed he had been stabbed several items.

Cater advised the he, the victim and a female were inside an apartment when Cater stabbed the victim several times without provocation.

The victim ran out of the apartment and collapsed a short distance away. A knife ws recovered at the scene. 

Homicide charges are pending against Cater.

HANOVER TWP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)--One person is dead and another is in custody after a reported stabbing in Hanover Twp., Luzerne County, Wednesday morning.

The coroner was called to the Marion Terrace Apartments and Police tell Eyewitness News one person was stabbed around 5am this morning.

They have a person in custody they are calling a person of interest. Police tell Eyewitness News that arrest is imminent.
