Pine Grove Area High School students excel with technology

PINE GROVE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- Learning the latest technology, a local high school is the first in the country to offer a new class.

Brad Fessler teaches 13 technology classes throughout the year at Pine Grove Area High School. Some classes use 3D printing to produce things like fidget spinners, but they also use the technology for the greater good. Students printed hands for kids to strap on to play instruments and perform everyday tasks.

"Sends muscle signals through electrodes, to wires connected here, to the board, to pull the fingers," said junior, Nicholas Brown.

While they make it sound so simple, there's a lot of time and research that goes into perfecting the product.

"There was only one way to figure it out, and that is by trial and error and more research after that," said Emily Bretz, senior.

Another course Fessler teaches, a 360-degree video and virtual reality development class. It's the first high school class focusing on this subject in the country.

These students are using the same techology the pros are using. It's not only preparing them for the real world, but it's also allowing them to create quality projects. Students use go pro cameras to develop promotional videos and interactive virtual tours.

"All six gopros will take a photo at the same time," said Brett Anspach, senior.

"The only other way you're going to get that experience is if you're there," said Alexia Shiffer, senior.

The virtual reality development class was piloted last year and instituted this year. It's funded through the Pine Grove Area Education Foundation.

"They're pushing the boundaries of what's possible," said Brad Fessler, teacher.

Earlier this year, Fessler was named Teacher of the Year by the Technology and Engineering Education Association of Pennsylvania. He also shares his experiences with other teachers at technology conferences.
