Harrisburg, PA - With winter weather rapidly moving eastward out of Pennsylvania, PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission have lifted the restrictions on certain commercial traffic on several interstates in eastern Pennsylvania.
The restrictions were lifted as of 6 PM for Interstate 81 between Interstate 83 and New York State line. The restriction on Interstate 81 between the Maryland line and Interstate 83 was lifted at 2:30 PM. Also, the restrictions were lifted from Interstates 78 and 80 as of 6 PM.
At the same time, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission lifted a similar restriction on Interstates 76 and 276, the mainline East-West turnpike between Harrisburg East and the Mid-County Interchange, Interstate 476, and the entre Northeast Extension, Interstate 476,
Speed limits of 45 mph are still in effect for portions of interstates in eastern Pennsylvania, except for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeastern Extension and on the Turnpike Mainline from Morgantown exit to the Mid-County exit. The 45 mph restriction remains on the Turnpike from the Mid-County junction to the Delaware River Bridge and drivers are urged to use caution on this stretch.
In addition, a ban on all commercial traffic has been lifted from Interstate 380 in northeastern Pennsylvania as of 6:30 PM. However, the ban remains in place on Interstate 84, also in northeastern Pennsylvania.
The purpose of the vehicle restriction was to help ensure the interstate remained open during the winter storm. A ban on all commercial vehicles is still in place for Interstates 84 and 380.
The types of vehicles covered by the restriction were:
- Empty straight CDL-weighted trucks;
- Large Combination Vehicles (double trailers);
- Tractors hauling empty trailers;
- Trailers pulled by passenger vehicles;
- Motorcycles; and
- Recreational Vehicles, or RVs.
