PennDOT crews work to reopen Coxton Road

Workers say the road connecting two counties could reopen Tuesday morning

DURYEA, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - Its now been almost a week since the Blizzard of 2017 dumped more than two feet of snow in many places.

Even though temperatures have helped the melting process, some roads in northeastern Pennsylvania have remained closed since last Tuesday.

One of them is Coxton Road.

The road connects Duryea in Luzerne County with Ransom Township in Lackawanna County.

On Monday, PennDOT crews attacked huge snow drifts that the storm left behind.

One of the large pieces of equipment that was brought in Monday looked like a large industrial fan but it was actually a double snow thrower.

Because there is still so much snow on Coxton Road, workers also were using a front-end loader to scoop the snow and truck it off the road.

"It makes it difficult to get around because we have to go all the way back, almost to Scranton, to go around," Carlyle Kapp of Ransom Township said.

Carlyle Kapp lives in Ransom Township.

With Coxton Road being closed, he says there's a big detour if he wants to go shopping.

He's happy to see efforts are underway to get the road reopen.

"I'm hoping it's sooner the better. Like I said, I get calls from other people asking me if it's open," Kapp said.

Barbara Wetzel also lives in Ransom Township and wants Coxton Road back open as soon as possible.

"There's grocery stores there. Mohegan Sun casino too!" Wetzel joked.

Immediately after the storm, PennDOT said this road would be closed "indefinitely" so people that use it really didn't know what that meant.

"I thought, it's probably going to be six months, maybe a year," Wetzel said.

After working to try and reopen Coxton Road Monday, PennDOT says the earliest the road could be back open would be Tuesday morning.

One of the challenges that cleanup crews faced is that Coxton Road is directly next to railroad tracks.

Because of federal laws, PennDOT is now able to clear any of the snow onto the tracks.
