Part of Lake Scranton walking trail to remain closed for another year

Dam restoration project responsible

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - Visitors to a popular walking trail in Lackawanna County may not have full access to the facility for at least another year.

Pennsylvania American Water says it needs to keep part of the trail around Lake Scranton closed while a $10 million dam restoration project is underway.

The dam was constructed back in 1898.

Pennsylvania American Water says the upgrades being done will help protect the drinking water for roughly 160,000 people locally.

Dana Caprini is a student at the University of Scranton.

As she came to run around Lake Scranton Thursday she definitely noticed the water level which has been dropping.

"It's definitely different from last year. I would always come in the beginning of the year last year," Dana Caprini said.

After hearing a dam restoration project will keep part of the walking trail around the lake closed until possibly the end of 2018, she was disappointed but says she'll still be able to get in her 3.5 mile run.

"I still get by. I track it and I run back so I know how much I'm running but it's annoying that I just can't run around!" Caprini said.

Pennsylvania American Water has actually kept part of the trail closed since February when a tornado caused a lot of damage.

But now, hearing that it will remain shut down until the end of next year caught some people off guard.

"I'm used to doing a big circle and now I can't do that now!" Chuck Gilpin of Moosic said.

"I'm glad they're fixing it, you know, not to fix something is worse!" Kathy Fisk of Clarks Summit said.

Pennsylvania American Water has released water from the Lake Scranton reservoir over the last month or so.

Company officials say it is nothing to be concerned about and expect the reservoir to naturally replenish itself over the winter.
