One man dead after early morning crash in Scranton; One person faces charges

(WBRE/WYOU-TV) UPDATE:  One man is dead, another facing charges after a deadly crash in Scranton early Friday Morning.    Scranton Police have charged the driver of the other car Noah Cohen with DUI in a crash that killed Robert Ortiz.

According to court papers, police detected a strong odor of alcohol and Cohen speech was slurred when they talked to him at the scene.  According to the court papers, Cohen said he was at a nightclub and didn't know how many beers he consumed

Eyewitness News Reporter Eric Deabill  reported at Noon.

Eyewitnesses say the wreck happened shortly after 2:00 am.

They believe a black car was traveling on Pittston Avenue when it collided with a red vehicle.

That red vehicle was driving on Breck Street — at an intersecting road with a traffic light — and for some reason, the vehicles collided.

At this point, an investigation is underway to determine exactly who had the green light.

The victim, who friends say was a young father with another child on the way, was in the red car.

According to investigators, the driver of the black vehicle has been taken into custody for questioning and more likely will be charged with DUI today. More charges could be filed later after the crash investigation is complete.

We have spoken to a close friend of the victims here at the scene this morning.

She says Robert Ortiz would have turned 22 in July.

She says he had just left her house around 1:30 am to get his car — and she was expecting him to return to her house — but he never made it.
