Nanticoke ambulance put in park

Nanticoke, Luzerne County (WBRE/WYOU-TV) When an emergency strikes second could be the difference between life and death.

Paramedics and EMT's with a local ambulance company are not just worried about their future patients, but also, the future of their jobs.

Nanticoke Community Ambulance is in a bind financially. So they decided to cut the service of one of their trucks. Leaving workers on edge and the community with questions.

Eyebrows are being raised after the Company sent this message out to all 32 employees Tuesday. "As of December 3rd 2017 the B truck will no longer be staffed. All current assigned shifts will be deleted."

"It is simply a revaluation of a second truck that we put on periodically," said Bernie Norieka, President of the Nanticoke Community Ambulance via phone.

The company is looking into if it pays to keep that vehicle running. Right now seven of the 32 workers are full time, the rest, are part-time or per diem employees who come and go based on availability. Medic 25-B is staffed during peak hours to cover the overflow of calls. Once it's disabled next month around ten part-time workers will be out of a job or left with fewer hours than before.

"Our people on that truck, in the system that we have, aren't able to move to naother truck we just didn't have that capability," said Chris August, President of the Nanticoke Career EMS.

With half of its service cut the question is where will the extra help come from?

"Hanover and Luzerne, so, the distance to get to somebody in a critical life threatning situation is greatly going to increase," said August.

Some pople who live in Nanticoke are worried because they say time means everything during an emergency

"A life lost is a life lost. You just can't get it back. That's somebody's mother, brother, sister, uncle," said Laura Milore.

With Medic 25-B being put in park. "We're still fully staffed the way we have been with our primary ALS Unit," said Norieka.
