CHESTNUTHILL TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)- It was an emotional day in court Friday for a father charged with involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of his four-year-old son.
Ryan Koch hid his face going into magistrate court Friday afternoon. Back in June he found his son Bentley unresponsive on the floor with his face covered in blood at their Saylorsburg home.
According to the criminal complaint, Koch initially thought it was a nose bleed and yelled for help to others in the home while carrying the boy to the bathroom. He then realized it was a gunshot wound and found a gun on the floor where the boy was lying.
While being questioned by state police he admitted to smoking marijuana while his son was sleeping and possible leaving a round in the chamber earlier in the hours before the boy was discovered.
About twenty friends and family members showed up Friday and many became emotional as photos of the deceased boy were entered into evidence. Those family and friends declined to comment.
Eyewitness News spoke with Koch's attorney afterwards.
"A case like this is a heartbreaker," says Defense Attorney Tom Sundmaker. "We have a four-year-old who unfortunately we see played out all the time, children playing with guns."
One charge for drugs was added and all other charges were held for Commonwealth court. The judge lowered Koch's bail to $100,000 from $200,000.
