Mahanoy Area School District Offers Free Breakfast and Lunch for Students

MAHANOY CITY, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- Students in a local school district will soon be receiving two free meals a day. The Mahanoy Area School District has qualified for the Community Eligibilty Provision Program -- a federal project that pays for students' meals at school.

Starting in the fall, all students in the Mahanoy Area School District will have access to a free breakfast and lunch during the school day. That covers the cost of a basic meal -- add ons will be an extra cost. The average school meal is about two dollars and forty cents -- and over the course of the school year, that can add up.

"The average working family for one child, could save over 400-dollars a year by us opting into the program," said Jack Hurst, with Mahanoy Area School District.

The federal government will provide the district with more than 120-thousand dollars for the free breakfast program, and another 400-thousand dollars for the free lunch program.
