Luzerne County Residents Rally To Raise Minumum Wage

Dozens of people rallied on Saturday in front of a Luzerne County shopping center to call for a raise to Pennsylvania's minimum wage.

The minimum wage in Pennsylvania is seven dollars and twenty five cents an hour. Activists with "Raise The Wage Pennsylvania" are pushing for ten dollars and ten cents an hour.

A few bills in the senate labor and industry committee would hike the minimum wage to ten dollars and ten cents an hour. Another bill in the committee wants to raise it to fifteen dollars. Activists want a bill to come to a vote soon and say a hike in the minimum wage could help boost the economy.

According to the National Conference Of State Legislatures, twenty nine states and Washington D.C. currently have state wages above the federal minimum wage of seven dollars and twenty five cents an hour.

Despite the push for a change, some people have mixed feelings about raising the minimum wage because of higher staffing costs.

This is a heated debate that will continue as some Pennsylvanians fight for a change.
