Nanticoke, Luzerne County -- The somber sound of bagpipes helped lead a procession on Saturday at Luzerne County Community College. Participants gathered for a special tribute to the late Raymond Glova, Sr. The longtime Plymouth Borough resident's name was added to LCCC's Walk of Honor which pays tribute to heroes whose lives deeply touched the community.
"He is probably someone who is a model for service and for firefighters," said LCCC President Tom Leary. Mr. Glova served more than four decades as a firefighter who had a bell in his house for many years to alert him to fires when there were no emergency dispatchers. "The bell would ring a number of times and that would indicate to him where the fire was. In the comfort of his home having a meal and watching tv, he immediately went into a stressful situation to save people's lives and to save property," said Mr. Leary.
State Sen. John Yudichak (D-14th) recalls a man who served his community with passion and dedication. "Someone that didn't ask for a pat on the back, wanted to do the job because he knew it was the right thing to do. He was dedicated to his family and his community and his country. That's the ideals that make America great. That's what makes northeastern Pennsylvania great."
The 81-year-old Glova died unexpectedly in February some 11-years after a car struck him and forced him to give up being a firefighter. "Ray suffered not only body pain but heartbreak for not being able to do what he loved and missed -- serving and protecting our community," said the honoree's widow Barbara Glova while speaking to the crowd assembled..
By adding Mr. Glova's name to the Walk of Honor, it's a lasting tribute to an everyday hero whose life was so much about being a first responder. "He was a very dedicated, responsible, caring firefighter," said Mrs. Glova. The Walk Of Honor dedication ceremony was held as part of LCCC's annual Community Safety Day.
