Local Leaders Aim to Improve Graduation Rate

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - The mission at the Mohegan Sun Pocono Friday was to figure out ways to raise the high school graduation rate to *90 percent* by the year 2020.

"In the Wyoming Valley, we are not far off. We are above the national average, at 88 percent, but we are still below that national target," said Bill Jones, the president of the United Way of Wyoming Valley.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the national high school graduation rate has reached an all time high of 83.2 percent. The organization "America's Promise Alliance" aims to continue closing the gap on the graduation goals and is partnering with the United Way of the Wyoming Valley to do something to cut the numbers of those dropping out of school.

The summit focused on several key strategies to inspire more children to graduate, including career readiness and family engagement.

"Children spend most of their time at home with their families and they're their first teachers. So really coming together as a team is important," said Anne Goffredo, a counselor in the Wilkes-Barre Area School District.
