Landmark Carbon County Building Focus Of Neighborhood Concern
By Andy Mehalshick , Posted By: Nick Hughes
Weatherly, Carbon County-Rose Delooze lives in the shadow of the former C.M. Schwab School in Weatherly and says she is concerned about her safety. Delooze told Eyewitness News, "They should do something with that building. It is such a great piece of architecture and it is such a waste." The iconic building has been a fixture in Weatherly since 1903 and was a high school for much of the last century. It was sold to a man from Virginia in 1997 and has not been used since. Weatherly officials have cited the owner numerous times in recent time with a total of $400,000 dollars in outstanding fines. The citations have been the center of an ongoing legal battle. Borough officials say they just want the owner to repair the building since it posed a danger to nearby residents and is impacting property values in the area. Juanita Beckmann of Weatherly said, "It is the first thing people see when they drive into Weatherly. It should be the masterpiece of the city." The owner told the I-Team, "Weatherly officials have been trying to strong arm me so they can take ownership of the property. I will fight them until the day I die. The building is not a danger." Borough leaders say they do not want the building and simply want it to be repaired.
