Judge Rules California Companies Must Carry a Cancer Warning on Coffee

(WBRE/WYOU-TV)   Here is a story that is brewing. A judge ordered coffee companies in California must carry a cancer warning label.

The ruling requires coffee roasters… distributors.. and retailers like Starbucks and others to include on their products a label that the beverage can cause cancer.

At the center of a lawsuit is a state law requiring warnings on a wide range of chemicals that can cause cancer.  One of those chemicals?  Acrylamide: A carcinogen produced in the coffee bean roasting process and found in coffee.

The judge in Los Angeles Thursday said Starbucks and other coffee sellers failed to show the threat of acrylamide was insignificant.

The National Coffee Association told CBS news - the lawsuit confuses consumers. and as far as the science goes… research suggests coffee may lower the risk of diabetes and liver disease - and has even been linked to a longer lifespan.

Researchers have said more study is needed on a possible acrylamide and cancer link - right now it's only theoretical.
