I-Team: Neighbors Contact the I-Team with Vacant House Concerns

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) People living in a Wilkes-Barre neighborhood say a vacant building is a tragedy waiting to happen. And they say city officials are not doing anything about it. They contacted the I-Team for help.

Neighbors say this home on Westminster Street in South Wilkes-Barre is very inviting for all the wrong reasons..

"I want to see it torn down."  Said Sharon Burney, who lives on Westminster Street.

So do dozens of other people who live near the vacant home.

They told the I-Team it's been going on for at least two years.

"It's just a hang out for kids that's all. The door is open they took the boards off. We don't know what they are going to ndo with the house." Said Burney

Sara Lucas and seven children live only feet away from the house. She warns them to stay away from the place..

"Some of the kids go over there and play around in it. is it going to fall or whatever ..fall down?"

"Well part of the problem is trying to get a hold of the out of town owners."  Said Ted Wampole, Wilkes-Barre City Administrator.

Wampole says city health and safety officers have condemned the property and issued citations but admits forcing the owner to take action is a big challenge.

He says the city cannot simply take action and tear it down because of legal liabilities.

The I-Team has tried to contact the landlord ...at this point our efforts have been unsuccessful..
