I-Team: Mailbox Con Concerns Grow Across the Region

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) A mailbox theft scheme in our region appears to be much wider in scope than first thought. Our I-Team first told you about the thefts on Tuesday. Since our report aired, people from across the area have been calling us saying they too have fallen victim to the scheme.. Eyewitness News Lead I-Team Reporter Andy Mehalshick   with new details.

The culprits behind this scheme are putting a sticky substance inside mailboxes hoping to catch your letters and get your personal information or even checks. Initially, we told you the scam centered around the Hazleton area. Well - that's not the case any more.

"I saw your story on tv and I said geez this happened to me."

Pat does not want to be identified but says her mail was stolen from this mailbox on Kidder Street in Wilkes-Barre.

Her daughter dropped in several envelopes with checks inside.. "She mailed it and came back and said 'God mom there's all kinds of sticky stuff inside the mailbox'. Pat told Eyewitness News

Pat thought it was possibly a kid was at the nearby Wendy's and spilled soda or something and never thought anything about it."

Until she started getting calls from her bank and credit card companies that her bills were not being paid..

She was out a thousand dollars..."I never realized they would happen I guess I'm very naive.."

We also spoke to suzette who lives in the Hazleton area.. Her mail was stolen from this drop box outside the Hazleton post office. She too called the I-Team after seeing our report.

"I put them into the mail slot I noticed there was something sticky but I really didn't think about it until several weeks later I checked my account and I noticed my checking account balance was down to zero."

The I-Team had calls from people in the Scranton, Williamsport and Sunbury areas telling us they believe they are victims of mailbox thefts. As for the investigation by postal inspectors we first told you about two days ago - sources close to the case say that several arrests have already been made and that additional suspects are being looked at. Eyewitness News has confirmed the investigation involves several federal agencies including the U.S. Postal Service, FBI. and IRS.
