I-Team: Jury Scam- Don't be Conned

(WBRE/WYOU-TV) There is new scam sweeping Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania. Someone is calling people threatening them with arrest unless they pay up! Our Lead I-Team Reporter Andy Mehalshick  spoke with a Luzerne County couple who says the cons were so convincing they fell for it. And tonight they want to get the word out. Don’t let this happen to you.

"You know it's just not right. It just makes me mad ad that's the God's truth." Loretta Bugaiski is fuming mad. Someone calling her home claiming to be from the Luzerne County Sheriff's Department saying that her husband Robert failed to show up for jury duty and as a result an arrest warrant had been issued for him.

The caller demanded three grand to quash the warrant. Robert said he thought the caller was legit because he did not miss a beat when he told the caller he would record the conversation. This is a sampling of the scammer's pitch. "You are required to be at the county courthouse at the sheriff's dept. located in the basement. Upon arrival you are required to make and post bond a collateral bond."

"He had the address he said who opens the mail you or your wife. He seemed to know there were only two of us here." Said Robert.

The conversation lasted a half hour. Bob never sent him money but he did send him a photo of his driver's license before he realized it was a scam.  "After all the conversation for so long I didn't know where to turn I didn't know where to turn at that point." He told us.

So they called the I-Team to get the word out, to warn other about the scam.

"I was just infuriated because these people sound so professional. The things they say the way they say it makes people believe they are who they are." Said Loretta.

The couple is now calling their banks and credit card companies alerting them to the scam. They are concerned about identity theft because the scammer has Robert's driver's license information. The Luzerne County Sheriff and the U.S. Marshal says they do not call people and demand money to take care of an arrest warrant for those who do not show up for jury duty.

Law enforcement experts say if you receive a call like this one -- do not give out any personal information. Just hang up and then file a report with police about the call.
