(WBRE/WYOU-TV) The investigation of the West Hazleton Fire company once again raises questions about what -- if anything can be done-- to prevent possible misuse of funds by non-profits , like fire companies. Legislation has been introduced in Harrisburg in recent years that would mandate certain checks and balances be in place for these groups-- but they've died on the vine.
"We have to do more with the department of revenue. They could be used as a tool to try to track the accountability in these organizations." Said Representative Tarah Toohil, Luzerne County
“If there is a way to legislate it we can legislate it. But they can take action immediately by requiring other stop-gap fiscal measures to make sure they are protecting their treasury." Added Senator John Yudichak.
Toohil and Yudichak admit there is no good reason why something has not yet been done in Harrisburg to help stop the financial abuses that we have seen so often in not-for-profit groups
