I-Team: Audit for Berwick booster clubs?

SALEM TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- A local school district is considering auditing its booster clubs.

In this I-Team story, Monday night the Berwick Area School Board talked about the financial transparency of those clubs.

Ron Robsock shared a laundry list of concerns surrounding the 12th Man Football Booster Club.

Fellow board member Christy Monico, who's also part of the booster club, didn't appreciate his questions about membership fees, 50/50 deposits, and fundraisers.

The heated discussion sparked a debate about all of the school district's booster clubs.

Board member Maryann Kovalewski said the district needs to determine if the clubs are operating under a nonprofit status.

She talked about a recent incident involving the treasurer of a parent teacher organization at a school in Bloomsburg, accused of stealing nearly $50,000 from the group.

The school board unanimously tabled a vote on auditing the booster clubs because of the unknown cost to the district.

Monico told Robsock it was "discriminatory" to single out the football team.  They both declined to speak to Eyewitness News on-camera after the meeting.
