Human Trafficking Cases Continue To Rise

(WBRE/WYOU) -- It might not be something many of us think about every day, but human trafficking is impacting our communities right here in northeastern and central Pennsylvania.

The commonwealth now ranks 13th in the nation for human trafficking cases.

New data from Polaris shows the number of cases across Pennsylvania is up about 40% from the year before.

About 150 cases were reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline.

"A lot of that has to do with there being an increase in attention paid to this issue," said Polaris Data Manager Sara Crowe. "People are starting to really understand this problem and recognize it in their own communities."

Crowe said more survivors are reaching out for help, and their stories help researchers figure out how people are being recruited for human trafficking.
