A new heart and vascular institute gives patients more medical options in the area.
Eyewitness News was there as the ribbon was cut on Wilkes-Barre General's $40 million project.  Eyewitness News at Seven Anchor Brittany Sweeney give us a tour.

The new heli-pad atop Wilkes-Barre General Hospital is just one way Commonwealth Health is keeping up with advancements in the medical world.

"Really provide the level of care that patients have come to expect and deserve here in Northeastern Pennsylvania, without the need to leave and go to Philly or the Lehigh Valley or New York." Said Dr. Cornelius Catena, CEO Commonwealth Health Wilkes-Barre.

Catena, along with city and business leaders, unveiled the hospital's vertical expansion.

"We have 34 critical care beds, up from 28.  The rooms are 2 to 3 times larger than we are currently using.  Much more natural light, much brighter, obviously everything is new, brand new technology.  So, yea we are very excited about the opportunity to provide this to our community." noted Catena.

There are now three new units on top of the existing emergency department.
One floor includes a Heart and Vascular Institute. Another houses an intensive care unit with that heli-pad built in close proximity.

"I can't think of a better Valentine's gift for the residents of the city of Wilkes-Barre and across Northeastern Pennsylvania."

Noted Wilkes-Barre Mayor Tony George.  He expects the latest project to be a huge financial gain.

"The expansion has attributed over $640,000 to the city and permits for the city expansion.  I am sure we will have future economic impacts with patients and families looking for the best care and come to wilkes-barre for that."

In addition to the expansion -- nearly 200 already existing rooms got a makeover as well.

"Again with a goal of giving our patients and community the ability to get care right here at home and getting outstanding care and not feel the need to leave and move out of the area." said Catena

A public grand opening at Wilkes-Barre General will be   Saturday, February 17 from 11:30am to 2pm -- which will include a health fair... Tours... and screenings.
