Honoring Shooting Victims Through Peace, Not Politics

Notre Dame students didn't participate in a walkout

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - Not all students participated in a walkout on Wednesday. At Notre Dame Catholic High School, students left their mark in a different way.

The idea came when one student approached his principal and asked what the punishment would be if he walked out of class. From there, students and faculty came up with a plan that everyone agreed with.

They decided their loudest contribution would come through song, psalm, and even silence. "Because we're a Catholic school, prayer is very important to us," says Sarah Marino, senior.

A prayer service. That's how Notre Dame decided to honor the lives lost in Parkland, Florida.

"It's scary, definitely. Because, why can't it happen here then? That's why we're trying to change it," says Anthony DiFonzo, senior.

Students prayed for not only the victims and their families, but even for those who disregard human life.

They say it's important to spread kindness to everyone, especially to someone who seems a little off.

"Kindness is huge. I know from personal experience, one bad day could just ruin someone," DiFonzo adds.

Notre Dame's dean of students knew one of the Florida victims, Chris Hixon. The athletic director was one of 17 killed.

"It broke my heart to see that," says Mr. Mark Allison, Dean of Students.

In the 1980's, Mr. Mark Allison says he taught Hixon in the Pleasant Valley School District.

"It's just strange how tragedies like that can hit so close to home, even though they're so far away," Allison adds.

Students say their assembly wasn't about politics, it was all about peace. The prayer service wasn't mandatory, but about 90 percent of students did attend.
