HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) There is new, aggressive crime-fighting effort in the city of Hazleton. The goal is simple, go after the bad guys and send a message to those who are thinking about coming to the city to commit crimes. Our Lead I-Team Reporter Andy Mehalshick is explains

It's called "Operation Pressure Points." a highly visible and very intense effort to fight crime. And police starting it now because they usually see a spike in crime during our hot, summer months. ((andy))(( chief jerry speziale- hazleton police dept. ))"You best stay out of Hazleton. You’re going to find yourself in trouble if you are here for a criminal purpose." Warned Hazleton Police Chief Jerry Speziale.

Chief Speziale says if you have any doubts about his warning. Then bring it on "We know where the crimes are, where the problems are, we know what's happening throughout the city based on evidence on the hot spots that we have created." He told Eyewitness News.

Speziale secured $23,000 in federal grants to put additional officers on the streets. The operation will not cost local taxpayers a dime

"We are going to use saturation patrols in marked units with all of our force and use all of the money and strategically plan it out and make it work for us." Said Chief Speziale

"These people on the street are punks. All they are all losers." Hazleton Resident Bob Yevak says he's sick and tired of the crime in the city and supports this effort 100 percent.

"We got guys who will go out and put the screws to all of them." Yevak added.Longtime city resident Gene Babula says he's watching his hometown deal with big city crime. And is hopeful this operation can make a difference. “They are trying their hardest. All you can do is applaud their efforts."

Chief Jerry Speziale said during certain time periods they will increase the usual five police cruisers on the streets to as many as 12.  "Operation Pressure Points" begins immediately and will run through the end of September. The city is now in the process of applying for additional grants to continue the effort to the end of year.
